CHRISTMAS TREES

Saratoga County has many wonderful Christmas tree farms where you can choose and cut your own tree ensuring the freshest tree available. A fresh cut tree retains it’s needles longer, has firmer branches and a fresh wonderful fragrance. Visiting a local farm also ensures a great family outing sure to instill lasting memories and encourage a family tradition.

Christmas trees fall into two groups, the short needled junipers, spruces, and firs, and the long needled pines. The ideal Christmas tree must have good needle holding ability, color, a bushy appearance, a good symmetrical shape, a pleasing fragrance and branches sturdy enough to hold ornaments. You can tell a fresh cut tree by feeling the needles and bouncing the tree on the ground. If not fresh, needles will fall when the tree is bounced and the tree trunk will feel dry. A fresh cut tree is very thirsty. They may drink between 2 pints to a gallon of water a day. So be sure to provide an adequate container for both support and water holding capacity.

Recycle your tree:

After the holidays, you can put your old tree to work in the garden. Small branches, roping and greens can be used as mulch for your flower beds to help reduce temperature fluctuations and prevent frost heaving. Strip needles from the branches and scatter them beneath acid loving shrubs as azalea and rhododendron. You can also erect your tree in the backyard after the holidays and convert it to a bird feeder. A fir tree is ideal for this purpose because it retains its needles longer. Adorn your tree with strings, of popcorn, suet, peanut butter to ensure a happy holiday to the birds.
