Apple Orchards
New York State, home of the Empire Apple, can boast that it's one of the top producers of apples in the nation - ranking only behind Washington State in terms of the sheer volume of apples grown here. Though much of the state's commercial apple production thrives in areas with milder winters such as the Hudson Valley and Great Lakes regions, Saratoga County is home to some bountiful orchards that specialize in flavorful apple varieties like the Empire, Macintosh, Macoun and Red Delicious, to name a few. Saratoga County orchards have much to offer the public beyond the local grocery store produce aisle. Though many were once only wholesale operations, Saratoga County orchards today open their gates to warmly welcome visitors. As soon as September 1st, pick-your-own operations enliven the fall season, offering consumers the chance to participate in the harvest, attain the freshest possible produce ("right off the tree") and enjoy time spent in the crisp autumn air. Orchard farmstands offer a bounty of other farm-fresh products as well, including freshly pressed cider, cider donuts, maple products, baked goods and additional produce such as peaches, pumpkins, squash, pears and plums. Many orchards offer activities as well. Farm tours, hayrides, farm and arts festivals and live music all enrich the experiences of their visitors.
